A player with 5d might has a 3d penetrating strike item for a total of 1hd. Does that mean he can make penetrating attacks of 6d? That sounds very cheap to me...

I think it depends on the GM. I personally allow him to do 6d as for Might NOT PENETRATING OR 3d PENETRATING strike otherwise sounds like a "minmax trick"

Yes I like that way of doing it. Use either your actual strike dice to make penetrating strike, or your Might +1 to make regular attacks
