Would this be a proper use of Variant?

Looking for a Gravity Manipulator type with the following Trait plus it's Variant.  Just curious if I'm doing it right:

Gravity Well (Stun 7d, Slow, Area, Selective, Knockdown, Concentration, Variant) [7-2+2+2+1-2+2= 10hd]
Singularity (Stun , Contagious) [8+2=10hd]

Big questions:  

1.) Does Variant need to be taken within each variant of the "master" power or just for the "master" power?

2.) Does the cost of the variant power cost a maximum of the total cost of the "master" power or the "master" power less the Variant pro?

1. You can't have a variant of a variant (unless the idea is really cool and not trying to game the system and squeeze more points out of it than you really should)

2. Does the cost of the variant power costs the total cost of the "master" power less the Variant pro. It's obnoxious that way. We handled this in our other supers game Paragons by making Variant a power in and of itself. Likely, P&P v 2.0 will take many of the lessons we learned into account, including this one.
